Grown Folk Apple Cider

We aren't big drinkers.  We are light weights and rather enjoy feeling "well", as opposed to "hung over" or sluggish...  Haha.  But every so often we get a little hankering for something fun to drink.  Whether it's a pretty teal libation, a refreshing coconut beverage or some thing warm on a cold day,.. sometimes we just want to try something new!

Some time back while trick or treating with the kiddos, someone offered some warm apple cider.  I cant say I had ever even had it before!  But this was the beginning of the hankering.  Some warm spiked apple cider just seemed like a great idea on a cold wet day!  We have tried a few recipes but it seems we always end up having to try a few then mixing what we like together to create our own ideal concoction.

Today is a cold, wet, drippy day and another opportunity to attempt our signature cider delight!  We may have nailed it,.. or at least close enough to share our idea of "Grown Folk Apple Cider".

While out at the store, cider on the mind along with something to put on the smoker, I came across these little packets in the produce section.

One is meant to be added to a couple bottles of wine and vermouth and the other to just a little rum and some cider.  (...and they were 2/$4) Undecided I stuck them in my cart for another day and went back to check out this Cider, Rum, and Ango found in Food and Wine.

Following the recipe we grabbed some cider, an orange, and began looking for those odd spices we never have on hand... Some whole Allspice ($7),.. Cloves ($5) and began to second guess myself as I looked for cinnamon sticks.  Why couldn't we just use "The Spice Hunter Mulling Spices" packet?  Let's give it a go! I held on to the orange,  and went off to find aromatic bitters.  Then went on to the red dot store for a dark rum. (We chose Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

Once we got home I was able to get to it and use my loose tea strainer to put some of the spices in. (not too much tho) and moved on to mix everything else in a pot. I have to say,.. this is by far our favorite yet! AND its so simple using the pre-packed spices...

This Grown Folk Apple Cider is super easy to adapt into a more strong/less strong drink.  Adjust it to your liking!  The following provides two drinks.

  • 1 Cup Apple Cider

  • 1 1/2 cup Dark Rum

  •  The Spice Hunter Mulling Spices (enough to fill a 15ml tea infuser)

  •  2 ounces sugar syrup (1oz raw sugar + 1oz water: stirred until dissolved)

  •  15 dashes Aromatic Bitters
  •  Rind of 1 Orange

In a medium saucepan on medium heat,  combine the dark rum and sugar syrup.  Stir ensuring sugar is dissolved and add apple cider, aromatic bitters, and Spice Hunter Mulling Spices loaded in the tea infuser.  Allow to cook until warmed through. Meanwhile, remove the rind from your orange and place 1 piece in each mug or glass. (2-4 depending on your desired serving...) Once the cider is heated through well, allowing the spices to steep 5-10 minutes. Pour into your mug and enjoy!  Its just that simple!!
